Labeled ingredients for chocolate chip scones.

Dry Ingredients – To prepare the scone dough you’ll start with some all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Whipping Cream – You’ll want to start with cold whipping cream. This is what makes these scones so easy to work with and so darn moist.

Chocolate Chips: We prefer these chocolate chip scones with dark chocolate chips, but you can use any variety you like. Sometimes we’ll use both full-sized dark chocolate and some mini semi-sweet chips for a variety. Mix it up however you like!

Topping – Before air frying you’ll brush the tops of the scones with some melted butter and sprinkle on coarse sugar! It’s a simple topping that adds a little crunch and sweetness.

Step by Step Instructions for Air Fryer Scones:

Pour the mixture onto a surface lightly dusted with flour and knead until it just comes together. Don’t overwork the dough. Divide into 3 evenly sized balls then flatten each ball into a 7-inch circle using your hands. Cut each circle into 8 triangles.

Brush the tops of the scones with melted butter and sprinkle with the coarse sugar. Add the scones in a single layer with room between each in the air fryer basket. Work in batches. Air fry the chocolate chip scones for 7 minutes.

How to Serve Scones:

These air fryer chocolate chip scones are perfect on their own with a cup of coffee or tea, but you can definitely dress them up.

Try them warm with a pat of butter, drizzled with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and milk, or even split and topped with jam.

They’re also fantastic for brunch alongside fresh fruit or as an afternoon treat with a glass of cold milk.

Storage & Freezing Instructions:

  • Store covered at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • Warm leftover scones in the air fryer for 1 minute to refresh them
  • Freeze unbaked scones for up to 3 months – air fry straight from frozen at 330°F for 8 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups dark chocolate chips
  • 2 cups cold whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • Coarse sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  • Add the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and chocolate chips to a large mixing bowl and stir to combine.
  • Pour in the cold whipping cream and use a wooden spoon to stir the mixture together until just combined.
  • Lightly dust your work surface with flour and pour the scone mixture out onto the flour. Lightly knead the mixture until it just comes together. Don’t overwork the dough.
  • Divide the dough into 3 evenly sized balls.
  • Flatten each ball into a 7-inch circle using your hands and then cut each circle into 8 triangles.
  • Brush the tops with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 330 degrees for 3 minutes. Add the scones to the air fryer in a single layer with room between each for air to flow. You will need to work in batches. See recipe notes for freezing instructions if you prefer to make a small batch.
  • Air fry for 7 minutes. The tops and edges should be just lightly golden in spots, but not overly browned. Every air fryer is different and you may need more or less time.
  • Let cool for at least 5 minutes before digging in.

Notes

Chocolate Chips: We love dark chocolate chips in these, but any variety will work. I often do a combo of full-sized dark chocolate chips and mini semi-sweet chocolate chips. Milk chocolate is great for kids.
Cook Time: Every air fryer cooks a bit differently, but we’ve tested these in multiple air fryers and found that 330 degrees for around 7 minutes seems to be the best option. You can also do 340 degrees for about 6 minutes. Cooking at higher temperatures led to the scones browning too much on the outside before the insides cooked through.
Freezing: These freeze beautifully and I nearly always have a bag on hand in the freezer! Add the uncooked scones to a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze for one hour. Transfer the scones to a freezer safe bag and freeze for up to 3 months. To cook from the freezer, preheat the air fryer to 330 degrees and cook for 8 minutes or until lightly golden around the edges. No need to thaw before cooking.
