This AIR FRYER EGG TOAST will get breakfast on your table in less than 10 minutes! A delicious runny yolk and a slice of toast to soak it up – all cooked at once in the air fryer.
Breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day, but honestly, who wants to stand over a stove cooking breakfast when you could be laying in bed for an extra 20 minutes stressing about all of the things you have to get done for the day? 😉
This recipe is the perfect compromise – it’s ready in less than 10 minutes and you don’t have to babysit anything at the stove!
Just crack an egg onto your bread and pop it in the air fryer. Go finish getting dressed or sit and stare at the wall while you mentally prepare yourself for what’s ahead…
We grew up eating egg in a hole and it’s always been a favorite, so having this air fryer version is a dream come true! I love that I can just pop it in and come back to perfectly toasted bread, an egg with a perfectly cooked yolk (we’ll give details in the recipe card for different levels of doneness!), and if you like, you can top it off with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese.
Breakfast is served – especially if you serve it with some of our air fryer bacon or air fryer sausage links.
I mean, we love breakfast – we’ve even made air fryer donuts and air fryer cinnamon rolls!
Ingredient Notes:
Bread – White or wheat toast will work well. We like Dave’s Killer Bread 21 Whole Grains and Seeds, but you do you.
Eggs – You’ll want one large egg per piece of bread.
Cheese – This is completely optional, but we like to sprinkle our egg with a bit of shredded cheddar.
How to Make Egg and Toast in an Air Fryer:
Prepare the toast– Use a glass and press it into the bread to make a round indention in the bread. This will serve as a bowl to hold the egg in the toast. Place the indented bread in your air fryer basket and then crack the egg into the indention.
Cook it – We’re going to air fry our egg and toast for a total of 8 minutes. This will create a gooey yolk and set whites. For a less done yolk, cook for 7 minutes. For a more done yolk, cook for 9 minutes.
Add Cheese – Totally optional, but always delicious! If you’d like to add cheese, open the air fryer during the last 2-3 minutes of cooking and sprinkle cheese over the egg. Continue cooking and the cheese will melt perfectly as the egg finishes cooking.
FAQ:
Follow the recipe as directed for eggs with set whites and runny yolks. They cook for 8 minutes total.
For a more well done egg, you’ll want to make the indention on the bread a bit larger to allow the egg whites to spread out further and cook more quickly. Follow the recipe but cook eggs for 9 minutes total.
Make the indention in your bread a larger diameter. This will thin out the egg and help it cook more evenly.
Egg and Toast Cooking Times:
- 7 Minutes – Barely set egg whites and a runny yolk
- 8 Minutes – Set egg whites and a gooey, jammy egg yolk (shown above)
- 9 Minutes – Set whites and a firm yolk
Keep in mind that all air fryers cook a bit differently and you may have to experiment a bit to find your perfectly cooked egg. Luckily, the process is simple and relatively cheap so experimenting is fun and easy!

Horrible!!!! Bread turned into a brick. This recipe needs to be deleted, it’s so bad!
Karly says
Hmm, we haven’t had that issue. We use our air fryer to toast bread quite often… does get more firm than using a toaster, but always still very good. Might be the air fryer or type of bread you used?

I have the instant pot vortex, I used thin Dave’s killer bread my egg covered the whole slice. I did as instructed for heat and time. The corners of my bread were a tad hard but it’s thin bread. Yes under the egg was what one would say as soggy , but it’s a wet egg so I expected it. For my air fryer I will likely do 2 min less on the initial cook add cheese and cook normal . My yolk was soft not runny, I like runny. My hubby thought it was perfect he could eat on the go no mess. This is gonna be a weekday go to. Thank u for sharing
Karly says
Hi Selina! I’m so glad that this worked out for you in your Vortex! Seems like it’s hit or miss with some air fryers so that’s good to know! 🙂

I wanted so much for this to work but it was a total fail for me. It took 11 minutes at 330 ° in my Corsori for the white to set and by that time the yoke was also pretty much set. And I see what another reviewer was talking about when they said the top looked like plastic. The whole top of the egg looked like it had wrinkled plastic wrap on it. I guess you have to have a different air fryer for this to work 🙁
Karly says
Sorry it didn’t work out for you! One thing that might help is making the indention in your bread wider, so that the egg whites have more room to spread out/cook through faster.
peachy says
That would take bigger bread then because I used a big glass and the indention and my egg was pretty much crust to crust. I think it is more that it works in your air fryer and not in mine.

I very interested in cooking this and had it for lunch today. I was very disappointed to find my Airfryer was very difficult to clean so I will not be cooking this item again.
I am however very pleased with a lot of your recipes, thank you so much

Thank you 😊

Good recipient but how do you crisp the bottom of the bread? The top cooked perfectly but the bottom was so soggy.
Karly says
Ooh, we didn’t have that issue! Are you putting the bread right in the basket with nothing underneath? That seems to work fine for us. I suppose you could try air frying it plain for a minute or two and then flip and make the indention/add the egg, but I haven’t tried that myself.

This is more about the page itself. Why is there so much convoluted information? Why so many darn pop-ups and other bits. Even the video took forever just to get to the how. Can’t you just get to the recipe and how to? It takes less time to make this then it does to scroll through all the unnecessary stuff.
Karly says
Hi Eugene! There is a jump to recipe button right at the top of the page if you’d like to skip all of the tips and tricks that we provide in the post. Click that button and you’ll go right to the recipe. Unfortunately, if we skip all of this information Google doesn’t think we’re providing complete information and readers end up asking us questions about the recipe and don’t have as much success. We try to answer preemptively, rather than wait for someone to run into a problem in the middle of making dinner.

I tried this recipe but the eggs white seems a little bit runny I don’t know what I did wrong
Karly says
If you make your indention in the bread wider, it will make for less thick whites so they cook a bit faster. 🙂
Cathy says
Are you putting a dish of some sort in your air fryer? The egg would fall through the perforations in my air fryer.
Karly says
The egg cooks on the bread, not on the air fryer basket.
Debbie Kane says
This is terrible!
By the time the whites had cooked, II felt like a layer of plastic on top!
Karly says
Oh no! I’m not sure why the top would feel like plastic? Maybe just something different with your air fryer? Unfortunatley they all cook a bit differently. Maybe try a lower heat for a longer time? And def don’t put the cheese on until the very end so it doesn’t overcook.

Same here… 🙁

My air fryer is my new kitchen “toy”. Love all of your recipes. I love egg salad and this recipe is making this a easy way to make it. Love the toast and egg breakfast. I can get my eggs every day of the week without all the trouble of having to make breakfast on the stove. Thank you for both recipes.
Karly says
You’re so welcome! Thanks, Mary! 🙂

I’m new to air fryer. Do you reheat the air fryer?
Karly says
Yep, you can reheat things in the air fryer! It’s great for fried foods or things you don’t want to get soggy like they would in the microwave. 350 for a few minutes usually does the trick. 🙂
Kim says
This didn’t work. Heated my fryer first, but the eggs ran down onto the basket. Messed it all up. Didn’t want to make an indentation clear through.
Karly says
Oh, that’s a bummer! I wonder if your bread was smaller or your indention was just too small around? We make as much of the bread indented for the egg as possible. 🙂
Sharon says
This looks great! Do you butter the bread before cooking?
Keep up the good work!
Karly says
We don’t but you definitely could! 🙂
Michael G Taylor says
Do we preheat. before we put this in the frayer?
Karly says
We don’t. 🙂
