This AIR FRYER EGG TOAST will get breakfast on your table in less than 10 minutes! A delicious runny yolk and a slice of toast to soak it up – all cooked at once in the air fryer.
Breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day, but honestly, who wants to stand over a stove cooking breakfast when you could be laying in bed for an extra 20 minutes stressing about all of the things you have to get done for the day? 😉
This recipe is the perfect compromise – it’s ready in less than 10 minutes and you don’t have to babysit anything at the stove!
Just crack an egg onto your bread and pop it in the air fryer. Go finish getting dressed or sit and stare at the wall while you mentally prepare yourself for what’s ahead…
We grew up eating egg in a hole and it’s always been a favorite, so having this air fryer version is a dream come true! I love that I can just pop it in and come back to perfectly toasted bread, an egg with a perfectly cooked yolk (we’ll give details in the recipe card for different levels of doneness!), and if you like, you can top it off with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese.
Breakfast is served – especially if you serve it with some of our air fryer bacon or air fryer sausage links.
I mean, we love breakfast – we’ve even made air fryer donuts and air fryer cinnamon rolls!
Ingredient Notes:
Bread – White or wheat toast will work well. We like Dave’s Killer Bread 21 Whole Grains and Seeds, but you do you.
Eggs – You’ll want one large egg per piece of bread.
Cheese – This is completely optional, but we like to sprinkle our egg with a bit of shredded cheddar.
How to Make Egg and Toast in an Air Fryer:
Prepare the toast– Use a glass and press it into the bread to make a round indention in the bread. This will serve as a bowl to hold the egg in the toast. Place the indented bread in your air fryer basket and then crack the egg into the indention.
Cook it – We’re going to air fry our egg and toast for a total of 8 minutes. This will create a gooey yolk and set whites. For a less done yolk, cook for 7 minutes. For a more done yolk, cook for 9 minutes.
Add Cheese – Totally optional, but always delicious! If you’d like to add cheese, open the air fryer during the last 2-3 minutes of cooking and sprinkle cheese over the egg. Continue cooking and the cheese will melt perfectly as the egg finishes cooking.
FAQ:
Follow the recipe as directed for eggs with set whites and runny yolks. They cook for 8 minutes total.
For a more well done egg, you’ll want to make the indention on the bread a bit larger to allow the egg whites to spread out further and cook more quickly. Follow the recipe but cook eggs for 9 minutes total.
Make the indention in your bread a larger diameter. This will thin out the egg and help it cook more evenly.
Egg and Toast Cooking Times:
- 7 Minutes – Barely set egg whites and a runny yolk
- 8 Minutes – Set egg whites and a gooey, jammy egg yolk (shown above)
- 9 Minutes – Set whites and a firm yolk
Keep in mind that all air fryers cook a bit differently and you may have to experiment a bit to find your perfectly cooked egg. Luckily, the process is simple and relatively cheap so experimenting is fun and easy!

Could I butter this toast before putting in egg?
Karly says
Sure, that would probably work great!

Tried this today and will definitely make it again. It was easy and quick to make without a mess to clean up afterwards.

Love to hear that! 🙂

I just made this.
It was delicious- it hit all the texture & flavor bases! Crispy toast, firm white, runny yolk & cheesy too!
I DID butter the toast after making the indentation. Butter is yummy.
I find that the timing is only approximate – but a good guide. My airfryer takes a bit longer to warm up, so I cooked a minute or two longer, keeping my eye on the progress.

So glad this was a hit for you! Thanks for the review!

What Temperature?
Karly says
330 degrees.

Made it per instructions but egg did not cook at all…until I set my air fryer to toast for about a minute. Then it was perfect!

Came out great! I used the Ninja Air Fryer. Lightly brushed the outside of the bread with olive oil and salt and pepper. I did preheat my air fryer at 330 for about 5 minutes. Cooked for 8 minutes and the whites were set the hold was set too but it was still delicious. I think next time I might make a wider indent that reaches closer to the edge of the crust and the whites may cook faster!

So glad you enjoyed this! Thanks for the review!

Not sure if it’s just my air fryer or not but I have done 2 rounds of this and my eggs are still runny. Came out delicious but I think it would be better if the temp was hotter and they cooked for 10-15 minutes with regular checks. Mine has been cooking for 10 minutes so far and is still runny.

Hi Shae! We’re definitely finding that people have different results with different air fryers – most especially with this recipe! It doesn’t seem to work great for some and for others it works fine! Sorry you’re having issues.

We had these this morning, I cooked it 1 minute too long, had a great taste. Just should have cooked it it 7 minutes
Karly says
Happy it worked out for you, Pam!

Recipe did not work for me. I did 330 for 9 minutes like this recipe suggests and the egg was still raw. The bread’s already starting to toast but since I have to cook it longer now I’m assuming it’s going to make the bread really hard. I’m using a Ninja air fryer.

Pinterest fail for me. I’ve been making Toad-in-a-Hole for many years and love this simple breakfast. Figured why not try the air fryer version! Well…the toast was harder than a crouton and the egg had a weird rubbery film on top that was unappetizing and weird to chew. Under that film the egg tasted fine. I did have to adjust the timing because the egg whites were still completely raw after 8 minutes, but each machine is different so no big deal there. But no thanks, I will keep making this on the stove in a pan.

I’m sorry to hear this didn’t work for you. I’m not sure why this recipe works well for some and not for others!

My first time trying it turned out ok…that being said I totally missed the part about making the “bowl” in the bread wider so I can’t wait to try it again! Would you recommend using butter or oil on the bread to prevent it from getting too crunchy? Thanks for the great recipe!
Karly says
I’m not sure if adding butter or oil will help keep the bread softer, but butter would be my go to just for the flavor. 🙂

Just love it. Remind me of my childhood
I will do it again and again
Nikki says
After pressing down the bread, I buttered the edges. Did cook for 8 minutes and next time will stop at 7 minutes.

Thanks for sharing, Nikki!

Overall the recipe has good intentions. I have a Ninja Foodie and feel like this recipe could be so much better with more details. I followed it exactly but, ended up having to cook it longer (3 more mins) and even then, the whites were runny but, the yolk was cooked. Bread was almost to crouton level of crunch. I am giving (4) stars because of the inspiration and I’ll do it again but, with my own technique. I do think that with some tips, this could work out well for most people. Here are some things I will be implementing next time:
– room temperature eggs. I will be setting them out for 20-30 mins ahead of time
– preheat the air fryer. I will be preheating my air fryer for 5 mins
– crack the egg in a small container or small glass and pour on indention instead of trying to crack it directly
– adjust the temperature. I think I might try either lower for longer (320 for 5-7 mins) or 345 for 3 mins (after preheating) and adjust from there
– break the yolk. I think half way through my cook time I will break the yolk.
Fixings: I added fat free cottage cheese, red pepper flakes, bagel seasoning and a side of grape tomatoes. I think I will pour in egg whites from the carton next time to try and make it higher protein and less calories.
Overall thank you for the inspiration:)
