This simple Chicken Philly Recipe is cooked in the air fryer in minutes! Season your chicken, peppers, and onions and toss them all in the basket to cook together.
There is something about that savory “Philly” flavor we all love. For some, it is the cheese, for others the hoagies, and for others, all the veggies cooked with the meat (even if veggies aren’t necessarily traditional – they’re always used around here).
For me, it is all of them. If they are all cooked together I think all the flavors blend together so perfectly and, while we often make our beef air fryer Philly cheesesteaks (and even our Philly cheesesteak egg rolls), it’s nice to have a lightened up chicken version on hand!
While this recipe would traditionally be cooked all in the skillet, we use the air fryer. This makes it less greasy but still allows all the flavors to meld together. Trust me, you will love it!
What We Love About This Chicken Philly Recipe:
- Everything cooks together so dinner is done quickly!
- Easy to adjust the seasonings to suit your tastes.
- You can use any type of cheese you have on hand – even Cheez Whiz!
- The bread gets so soft and warm and the cheese is so melty after being wrapped in foil in the air fryer!
Ingredient Notes:
Chicken– We use breast meat, but thighs will also work. Slice into thin strips.
Veggies – We’re using a bell pepper and onion, sliced into thin strips. They’ll cook perfectly right alongside the chicken.
Seasoning – We keep it simple with seasoned salt and garlic powder.
Provolone- Our Philly cheese of choice is provolone. We add entire slices to the recipe, so no need to shred it or anything.
How to make Philly Chicken in the Air Fryer:
Combine ingredients– Slice your chicken and veggies into thin strips and toss them into a mixing bowl. Drizzle your olive oil over the top of this and sprinkle with seasoned salt and garlic powder and give it a good stir to coat everything.
Cook the ingredients – Dump the chicken and veggies into your air fryer basket. Cook for 12 minutes at 390 degrees F, gently shaking the basket or stirring halfway through cooking.
Fill your hoagies– Split the chicken and veggies evenly between the hoagies and top the meat with cheese. Close the sandwich and tightly wrap each sandwich in foil and put them back in the air fryer again. Cook for 3 minutes at 390 degrees F. They’ll keep warm in the foil for a bit, so now is a great time to whip up your air fryer frozen french fries to serve with your sandwich!
FAQ:
Add your sliced mushrooms right in with the chicken and vegetables and let everything cook together. Increase the seasoning just a bit to be sure everything is well seasoned.
If you’ll have leftovers, it’s best to store the chicken and vegetables in a sealed container in the fridge. Reheat them in the air fryer at 350 degrees for 3-4 minutes before filling your hoagie rolls. Once your rolls are filled and wrapped in foil, heat at 390 for 3 minutes.

I know some of you are going to ask where is the cheez whiz! You can absolutely swap out the provolone for Cheez Whiz. American cheese also works well – we prefer white American if not using provolone.
Adjust seasonigns to suit your tastes. We’re huge fans of this Cheesesteak seasoning as well!
