All of us hardcore air fryer fans have tried making shrimp in our air fryer. We love it right? Every shrimp recipe we have tried has turned out great from air fryer! We have made super duper easy recipes like air fryer frozen shrimp and air fryer shrimp fajitas, to just plain simple air fryer coconut shrimp and maple bourbon glazed shrimp.

I guess you could say we are kind of fanatics when it comes to air frying shrimp.

But trust me, there are all great! If you loved one of them, you will have to try the rest.

But let’s talk about this Bang Bang Shrimp! It’s the most addictive appetizer on the Bonefish Grill menu – super popular and tasty enough that you should consider ordering 2 servings, because you’ll want plenty to go around.

Or you can just our air fryer bang bang shrimp at home! 😉

The shrimp cooks up nice and crispy and then gets drizzled with a sweet, creamy, spicy sauce that is really the star of the show. It takes fried shrimp to the next level and everyone who tries it just loves it!

Bang bang shrimp ingredients spread out on a countertop.

Shrimp– 1 pound large raw shrimp, thawed, deveined, tails and shell removed. You an use any size shrimp you prefer – just adjust the cook time as needed.

Breading – You will need a couple of eggs, flour, cornstarch, onion powder, garlic powder, and panko bread crumbs.

Bang Bang Sauce– This is really easy with mayonnaise, Thai sweet chili sauce, and sriracha. We recommend this brand of Thai sweet chili sauce.

How to Make Bang Bang Shrimp in the Air Fryer:

Collage of three steps to breading shrimp.

Prepare to bread the shrimp– Grab three shallow dishes that you can dip your shrimp into. The first dish needs flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. For the second dish, you need to crack two eggs and beat them until consistent as you would for scrambled eggs. For the final dish, add in your Panko bread crumbs.

Bread the shrimp– Dip each shrimp, one at a time into the flour dish, then egg, and finally the panko. When you get to the panko press the shrimp firmly into the panko to be sure it sticks well to the shrimp.

Breaded shrimp in an air fryer basket.

Cook the shrimp– Spritz or brush oil onto the air fryer basket then add your shrimp in a single layer, not letting them touch. Spritz the shrimp with oil spray also. Air fry for 10 minutes at 385 degrees F.

Make the sauce for the shrimp– Whisk together some mayo, chili sauce, and sriracha until it is smooth. It is now ready for dipping!

Serve – We like to serve our Bang Bang Shrimp as an appetizer, just like at Bonefish Grill. Make a bed of lettuce, pile on the shrimp, and drizzle with as much of the bang bang sauce as you like.

Bang Bang Shrimp Sauce:

Bang Bang Shrimp Sauce is a super simple sauce that consists of just three ingredients: mayo, Thai sweet chili sauce, and sriracha.

The sauce is sweet and creamy with a bit of spice. You can easily make this sauce more spicy by adding extra sriracha.

Bang Bang Sauce is also tasty as a dip for fried shrimp or chicken strips!

FAQ:

What is bang bang shrimp?

I am not sure if this name came from Thailand or the Bonefish Grill, but in America, it was certainly popularized by the Bonefish Grill. The name comes from the double spice, or double u0022bangu0022 of Sriracha and Thai chili sauce.

What do you serve with bang bang shrimp?

If you are serving this as a main course we recommend rice or a light pasta. You could also serve with French fries or a roasted veggie as those go with just about everything.

Recipe Tips and Substitutions:

To quickly thaw frozen shrimp, add shrimp to a ziptop bag, remove as much air as possible, seal, and place the bag in a large bowl of cool water. It will take about 20 minutes for the shrimp to thaw.

To make life even easier, start with a box of frozen breaded shrimp and air fryer until cooked through and crispy. Add the sauce and dig in!

For the bang bang sauce, you can make it spicier by adding more sriracha to suit your tastes.

Our copycat Bang Bang Shrimp recipe is our addicting version of the famous Bonefish Grill recipe! We use the air fryer to make crispy fried shrimp and then top it with a 3 ingredient, sweet, creamy, spicy sauce. This makes a great appetizer, but we've been known to serve it as a main dish with rice and veggies, as well.

Notes

You can use any size of shrimp for this recipe, be sure to adjust cook time accordingly.
You may not need all of the sauce – add as much as you'd like to make the shrimp as saucy as you'd like. Serve extra on the side as a dip. Sauce will last in the fridge for at least one week and makes a good dip for fries and chicken.
The spice comes from the sriracha, so adjust to taste.
We serve this as an appetizer over a bed of lettuce with extra sauce for dipping. As a main dish, we usually serve this with rice and vegetables.

It would take a decent amount of work to make this one keto since you’d have to change the breading and the sauce. I do think it would work well with small pieces of white fish though! Just adjust cook time as needed.
